The WOW Department Portfolio is always a work in progress

Rhonda Vincent concert by Rick Maitri of The WOW Department

Rhonda Vincent concert poster

  • Photoshop
  • Typography
  • Design

This poster was custom designed using manual techniques, CorelDraw, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, provided and original photos. I also photographed the event and, upon her request, granted the performer permission to use the files from which she posted images to her promotional Web sites to rave reviews from fans.

Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver by Rick Maitri of The WOW Department

Old-time music, old-time look

  • Photoshop
  • Typography
  • Design

Knowing the type of music Doyle plays, I gave the poster a warm but worn look. I created a ragged-edged parchment background then made Doyle's photo sepia while layering in white highlight, but leaving the mandolin in full color. Since there was so much information I chose a thick, compact type to make the names stand out.

Denver and Grandfather by Rick Maitri of The WOW Department

Grandfather and Grandson

  • Photography
  • Colorization
  • Photo Compositing in Photoshop

The client had a photo of her father as a child and asked me to photograph her son and combine the images. The challenge was to bring the old photo to life through manual colorization in Photoshop. After compositing the images, lighting was adjusted within the application to create a look of consistency.

Lori by Rick Maitri of The WOW Department

Photo Painting

  • Photography
  • Digital Retouching
  • Photo Painting with Corel Painter

I like using natural light in photography whenever possible. Oblivious to my intention, Lori complied with my request for a photo by the window at her office. I took the image into Photoshop for a little tasteful retouching and controlled blurring, then into Corel Painter for the digital, but very artist-like task of repainting using a Wacom tablet.

Laura by Rick Maitri of The WOW Department

To Shop or not to Shop?

  • Photography
  • Photoshop

It's hard to improve on a subject like Laura, but with some Photoshop channel adjustments and extremely subtle tweaks, she is magazine ready.

Westlake Massage and Spa, The Best of Smith Mountain Lake, ads by Rick Maitri of The WOW Department

Westlake Massage & Spa

  • Ad Design
  • Photoshop

These are examples from the series of ads that spurred an unsolicited full-time job offer from the magazine in which they were published. I like to think that my wife, Cyndi's massage therapy success and recognition as "The Best of Smith Mountain Lake" from 2008 to now were launched by these ads, but her clients know it's because she is that good. Check her out at westlakemassage.com.

library poster by Rick Maitri of The WOW Department

From Dublin to Bruges

  • Photography
  • Image Manipulation in Photoshop
  • Photo Compositing in Photoshop

I had to compensate for lack of a wide angle lens by adjusting perspective in the final image. Forced inside on a rainy day, the lighting setup was limited so everything had to happen in post-production for this New River Community College Library READ poster featuring Angie and her BMW. I was granted permission from a kind fellow in the UK to use his Bruges street scene for the background.

Rockwood Inn and Event Center SW Virginia Bridal Guide ad by Rick Maitri of The WOW Department

The Wedding Album

  • Typography
  • Ad Layout
  • Corel Draw and Photopaint

This ad for the Southwest Virginia Bridal Guide was photographed by the talented Michael Havelin. Our session was shot in the middle of renovation so we literallly cleaned house. Years of neglect had left the site in sad shape so extensive retouching was essential before the image went to press. The historic Rockwood Manor is now a stunning bed and breakfast and event center.

Angie's wedding by Rick Maitri of The WOW Department

I'm outta here!

  • Photography
  • Photoshop Masking
  • Photoshop Cloning

I shot this wedding at the Inn at River Bend in Giles County, Virginia. The client (sister of the bride) requested that she and the minister be removed from the photograph which made it necessary to reconstruct part of the deck and fill in the vegetation.

International Association of Administative Professionals lapel pin and splash page by Rick Maitri of The WOW Department

It was all a blur...

  • Photoshop

The 07-08 "Forward Moving" theme of the Virginia chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals was a fun one to bring to life - a dynamic image for a dynamic group. The centerpiece of this Web page I tossed together (using a canned background) is a lapel pin in the shape of license plate that I designed for the group.

Blacksburg High School Bruins and James Monroe High Maverick logos by Rick Maitri of The WOW Department

How 'bout those Bears!

  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Corel Draw

A promotional company that manufactures various sports-related products asked me to recreate team logos for a few choice high schools. Paw prints and static animal faces are just boorrrring. The mascot should have as much energy as the team and its fans.
